Cocoa Theobroma cacao
Theobroma literally translates as ‘food of the gods’ and ‘cacao’ originates from the Aztec language as ‘bitter water’.
Cocoa is the rich bitter-sweet powder produced by the seeds from the pods of the Cocoa tree which grows in evergreen tropical rainforests, predominantly in Central and South America. The Cacao pods vary hugely in size and colour and can range from 4inches to 12inches in size. The trees themselves can survive and produce pods for up to 100 years.
Of course, the most famous preparation of this plant is the production of Chocolate where the seeds from the pod are powdered and luxuriously combined with cream, milk and sugar.
We use the Cocoa shells in our After Dinner tea to make a deliciously rich and lightly cocoa tea.
